Lighting the future - Devansh’s Open Studio Launchpad

A recap of Devansh’s January 25th event with Capsul Studio.

“My goal was to become an architect without going to architecture school,”

It started with soupy shapes on paper. Irregular blobs became shaded contour lines, turning 2D shapes into 3D ones, marking the transition from abstract to art and Devansh’s sketches to reality, in the form of his Pearl Lamp.

His Open Studio Launchpad event with Capsul gave attendees a personal look at his work, including his designs and sketches and the process that informed them. Taking place over the course of a full day, the event brought Devansh the opportunity to show off his talent and growing creative practice, with Capsul’s studio taking on the shape of a clean, open and airy space for Devansh to show attendees elements of failed prototypes and sketchbooks, a way for him to situate his viewers within his mind.

Running from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., the space was open for a variety of people to attend, setting a new vibe for different hours of the day. The morning was all business—a chance for Devansh’s colleagues to see him professionally but also personally, letting his attention to detail shape a new perspective of his design practice. After slowing down in the afternoon, the event took a turn in the evening when Shen.MP3, a local DJ was introduced to the studio to enhance the vibes. With dim lighting and friends around, it was easy to relax into casual conversations.

“There were a lot of different people from different parts of my life that came, It was cool for my dad to meet some of my work colleagues, and there was an editor from a design magazine in Toronto that came and ended up including me in an article and giving me a small award.”

The community that came together for the event was marked by friends, family, and colleagues of Devansh’s but it also spoke to the deeper need for human connection fostered by art and creativity. Capsul provided this space and gave Devansh the freedom to transformed it into what it was. Sometimes it can feel hard to bring people together, especially ones that all come from different fields, but with an event like this, that bridge is crossed easily, uniting a group based on mutual love and support.

Set up for the event is determined solely by the creatives doing the hosting, but Capsul provides sponsorships, resources, social media support, and various other necessities to ensure a smooth event through the Launchpad Package. When hosting his own event, Devansh recalls the cleanliness of the space and the ease of working with founder J’don McSween, especially with the setup process. Arriving the night before the event to ensure tables were set up and to prepare any necessary materials led to a smooth operation the following day.

“I think because I spent so much time thinking about the event and planning for it, I was confident in the way that we executed [...] what we wanted to do for the event,”

He describes early ideas of making the set up for the event feel like a living room space, which then pivoted to the exhibition having a focus on the lamp itself, rather than the lamp’s surroundings. There is recognition that comes with the completion of a project, something that can only be reached when all your efforts have gone into it. Ultimately, Devansh feels that his efforts were rewarded and that the event was a success.

The Launchpad also marks a specific point in time for Devansh, the signifying of a new chapter starting. Hosting the event in person was a way to bring different groups together and form a closer relationship with each individual who attended, something that can only help his brand grow. The physical markers of the event, like the booklets he handed out, contribute to the physical reminder that this happened and that it’s a key part of his business journey.

The success of the event can also be measured by other physical markers, like the number of people who attended, social media engagement, and sales numbers. Devansh estimated about over 100 people came in throughout the day, an additional 50 followers gained on socials, and about five sales of the lamp.

“I think people said that they enjoyed it,” said Devansh. “They enjoyed seeing the behind-the-scenes of things.”
